We see a large number of folks with headaches in our North County, St. Louis, MO office, and Dr. Mark Holland has been able to help many of them. Indeed, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that one half of all adults struggle with some sort of headache problem, so this certainly isn’t a surprise. One of the most common kinds of headaches which our patients struggle with is cervicogenic headache which, happily, chiropractic can often help.
Cervicogenic Headaches Explained
A cervicogenic headache is one that originates from a problem in the cervical spine. It could be caused by a problem with either the spine itself (in particular, the vertebrae, joints, or discs), or it might be attributed to a problem in the muscles and tendons of your neck. This dysfunction in your spine leads to compression or aggravation of the spinal nerves, which can contribute to headache pain.
How can you know if the headache you are suffering from is a cervicogenic headache? Apart from getting a diagnosis from a healthcare professional, a common symptom of cervicogenic headaches is tenderness or discomfort in your neck. This is occasionally accompanied by pain in the back of your head or between your shoulder blades.
How Chiropractic Helps with Cervicogenic Headaches
Since cervicogenic headaches will not go away until whatever issue is causing them is remedied, it is vital to receive treatment instead of just trying to "wait it out." Chiropractic care is an effective approach, and one that offers a great deal of relief.
In one study released in Chiropractic & Osteopathy, experts looked at 80 people who had frequent cervicogenic headaches. One-half received chiropractic care and the other fifty percent engaged in light massage therapy. Each participant was assessed 12 and 24 weeks after the treatment and it was discovered that chiropractic provided the best results.
Specifically, this study revealed that chiropractic adjustments gave patients better pain relief and diminished the frequency of headaches that occurred. In addition, it also lessened the disability that resulted from these painful headaches.
